Alice Bell Baptist Church located in North Knoxville demolished its former education building on Friday.

The congregation stopped using that building due to structural problems in January 2011.

The building was constructed during the 1950s, and the church had plans to remodel the building. The structural damage was so significant, however, Alice Bell Baptist Church determined the most most cost effective option was to tear it down and rebuild.

Church members, like Charlotte Heaton, said the education building holds a lot of memories, but they're looking forward to what lies ahead

"It's sad. . . it really is," said Heaton. "That building has been there a long time and it hurts to see it going, but it is making way for new."

The new multi-purpose building will house classrooms, a basketball court and a gym. The church hopes to have the new building ready to open in about nine to ten months.
