NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee election officials report that nearly 605,000 people have cast ballots as the state's early voting period hits its halfway mark.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Wednesday that lines have been moving well and faster than will be expected on Election Day on Nov. 6.

Hargett described the early voting turnout so far as high. The period began on Oct. 17 and will continue through Nov. 1.

During the last presidential election in 2008, more than 1.5 million Tennesseans cast ballots during early voting. That was about 58 percent of all ballots cast in that election.
