An East Knoxville family grieving the loss of their teenage boy is also struggling with how to pay for his funeral.
All this week, the community has stepped up to help.
De'Vonte Armour, 17, died suddenly over the weekend from unknown natural causes. He was a junior at Austin East High School.
At the intersection of Castle Street and Martin Luther King Avenue, friends and family of Armour have collected donations for the burial costs. The community also organized donation drops at several stores and a memorial bike ride.
The generosity of strangers has already raised enough money for his burial, but they still need more for De'Vonte's funeral.
His aunt, Latoshia Turner, said they couldn't be more grateful for the outpouring of support.
"When we went down there on Monday, we didn't know what we were going do. But the support from the community has been overwhelming. We didn't expect it," Turner said.
Turner said she loved her nephew like her own son.
"He had a big heart, a loving smile, and he would go over and beyond to help out anybody he could," said Turner.
The grassroots community donations are what have helped them to raise $6,000 so far. Their original estimates were around $12,000.
If you would like to donate, there is an account available at Jarnigan and Son Mortuary located at 2823 Martin Luther King Junior Avenue Knoxville, TN 37914. The phone number is (865) 524-5575.
Armour's funeral will be Saturday.
