Knoxville youth will get a chance to grow fresh food, and a green thumb of their own, thanks to a new community effort.
The New Harvest Park Community Garden is now open.
The Knox Area Coalition on Childhood Obesity and Knox County Parks and Rec set up this project.
The goal is to promote healthy lifestyles to local kids, and provide some physical activity while working in the garden.
"You get to see what you're eating. You see where tomatoes, and peppers and greens come from instead of going to the grocery store. You're minimizing the cost, the waste. You have an appreciation for what you've grown, : said Michael Moore, with the Knoxville Area Coalition on Childhood Obesity
Groups of children will attend a ten week program at the garden, learning about horticulture and environmental science.
A grant from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters helped make this project possible.
