Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of 8 flights out of McGhee Tyson Airport on Monday.  All of the fights were heading to the east cost to airports like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey.

Fortunately, most of the passengers who had their flights canceled were notified last night, so there weren't many passengers who were left stranded at the airport Monday morning.

Officials expect more flights could be canceled to connecting cities Monday night and Tuesday, so if you are traveling, be sure and check with the airport before you leave.

Some 50 million people in the most heavily populated corridor in the nation are preparing to endure hours of strong winds, torrential rains, flooding and prolonged power outages.

The director of the National Hurricane Center says the storm's sheer size means some coastal parts of New York and New Jersey could see water rise up to 11 feet above ground from surge and waves. The rest of the coast north of Virginia could see up to 8 feet of surge.
