Darin' Erin: Chainsaw art

A little while ago, Photographer JJ and I went to Gatlinburg to do a story on a man who made side show art.

As we walked into the Make it Magic building, we noticed all the chainsaw animals all over the property.  We mentioned it when we got inside, and Rick and Twinkles told us they did the carving, and invited us to come back sometime.

So on short notice, they welcomed us back with open chainsaws. (Sorry, I was trying for an Edward Scissorhands moment there and it did not work.)

Apparently, Rick figured out I might not be able to make one of the beautiful carved bears in a 24 hour period, so he decided that a pumpkin would be much easier, and better suited to the season.

I have seen some of these guys on television before, and if you had told me I could actually make something, I'd laugh at you.

So I stared down my log as Photographer JJ stood behind me laughing. Of course, being in the Arts Community, people started to stop to see what was going on. They quickly walked away when they realized it was my first time with a chainsaw.

It was a little bit of a "watch and do" type of thing because we had special noise protection on and I couldn't hear a word of direction.  Let's just say I'm not always good at copying and Rick was laughing with JJ at this point.

After about 45 minutes of work, I had what was starting to look like a pumpkin, and then Rick sent out the heavy hitter, Twinkles.  She is the finite artist who creates the detail, or as I like to say,  someone to clean up after me.

After about two hours (or that's what Photographer JJ says), we had a painted pumpkin. Not too bad for my first effort, but let's just say I'm pretty sure the tourists won't be rushing in to buy my work of art.

One last thing, a little disclaimer:  did I mention these are not your usual "cut down the tree chainsaws?" Don't go willy-nilly chopping up stumps.. it's not that easy, so don't try this at home!
