The Oak Ridge police kicked off a program that will introduce members of the public to how the department works. The first Citizens' Police Academy class started Thursday.

It's a chance for officials to teach different aspects of the job, like working crime scenes, using firearms, and how red light cameras work.

Chief James Akagi says it's a good opportunity to engage the community.

"It's a great way to outreach, for us to outreach into the community and let them know what we're doing. It's one thing to have them see us do it, it's another to have them participate and to have the chance to understand why we do things the way we do it," he said.

The chief says 24 students are enrolled. The academy continues for 12 weeks.
