Breast surgeon Dr. Caren Gallaher says diet likely plays a huge role in how our bodies function and develop diseases. Given that , on a recent trip to the grocery store, she was quick to point out food that can actually fight cancer.
She says mushrooms are one of the so-called "Super Foods" because they contain an inhibitor found in some of the main drugs that are used to fight breast cancer.
Fruit is another super food. Dr. Gallaher says grapes and berries have a cancer-fighting antioxidant called Resveratrol. Another not so familiar fruit, pomegranate, is also a health booster.
"By drinking a glass of pomegranate juice a day you can decrease the risk of bone metastases in prostate cancer by about 67 percent," said Gallaher. " This is being looked at as well for breast cancer."
Galllaher says walnuts contain ellagic acid which is proving to be a strong cancer fighter. She adds all you need is 2 ounces of walnuts a day.
Green tea rounds out her list of super foods. It has a chemical called polyphenol. But Dr. Gallaher says to get the maximum benefit you need to drink three cups of brewed green tea daily that has steeped for at least 10 minutes.
If you have a medical condition, Dr. Gallaher says to talk first to your doctor before making any dietary changes.
But she adds, if you're healthy, any and all of these food items show potential when it comes to protecting you from cancer.
