A caretaker for an elderly Kentucky man has been charged with murdering him.

According to Kentucky state police, they were called to a home on J. Goodin Branch Rd. in Barbourville just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.  They found the home's owner, Earl Carter, 75, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

His caretaker, Charlene "Sue" King, 49, of Barbourville, is charged with first degree murder and is being held in the Knox County Detention Center in Kentucky.

King had been living with Carter for several months while supposedly caring for him.

Police say she called 911 shortly after the shooting and said Carter was trying to rape her.

When crews arrived, they found Carter was already dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators say they don't buy King's story, and neither does Carter's stepson. He told WLEX-TV in Lexington that Carter said the two were involved in a romantic relationship.

"It's probably one of the most shocking things of all of it is the fact that it's somebody that I never would have believe would do this, and someone whom I felt was close to him, and somebody he had been good to. He had done a lot for her. I mean, we had took care of her for years," said Gary Craig, Carter's stepson.

King faces one count of murder.
