Knoxville drivers could soon be towed or ticketed for parking their non-electric cars in spots reserved for recharging electric vehicles.
There are 24 car charging station throughout the city. Those who park in the spots illegally could be towed and face a $50 fine.
The City Council approved the move at its meeting on Tuesday. The city says it's trying to take proactive steps to make sure the spots are available for those who need them.
"Obviously we want to on the front end do things right and make sure the people don't take advantage of certain situations out there. So I think it is something that is very pro-active on the front end for us to be able to address," said Nick Pavlis.
The council must pass the ordinance on second reading before it can go into effect.
