An East Knoxville church that suffered major damage after a fire is starting to take shape again as rebuilding efforts continue.

Mt. Calvary Baptist Church caught fire December 2010 just two hours before the congregation was scheduled to get together for a Christmas party.

Two years later, a new sanctuary is under construction and progress is visible.

"It's not something we planned, it just happened, and we're going to make the best of it," said Reverend Leroy Franklin.

Mt. Calvary is using tithes, offerings and insurance money to pay for its new $3.4 million sanctuary.

"You know, we believe that tomorrow is a new day full of new possibilities, and that sometimes detours lead you to greater things."

In the time between, church members continue to meet and hold events. The congregation holds service in the church's gym.

"It doesn't really matter the environment or the situation, because it's really the congregation [that] makes the church what it is, itself," said Deacon Phil Majors. "

We have a building, but the people within the church makes the congregation."
