Monday, reality set in for the Tennessee Vols. Derek Dooley was not on the sideline for their morning practice. Instead, interim head coach Jim Chaney was calling the plays.

Chaney, the Vols offensive coordinator, said he thought the team handled the first practice sans Dooley well.

"We used the same format they had, so they weren't lost and they knew what they were doing. I think early on in the meetings it was quiet and sober," Chaney said.

Dooley finished his career at Tennessee with a 4-19 record in the SEC and when given the option, chose not to coach the final game of the season against Kentucky.

Offensive lineman Ja'waun James said he was surprised Dooley declined to coach in the season finale. "We just gotta go out there and try to win this game for our seniors and for everybody."

The Vols will resume practice Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
