Tuesday, the Knox County Sheriff's Office announced they are cracking down on thieves this holiday season.

This is the second year for the "Safer Holidays Task Force."

The Knox County Sheriff's Office partners with area businesses to combat retail theft, forgery, fraud and other crimes.

Expect to see more deputies out in marked and unmarked cars and undercover. The goal is to make shopping safer for area residents.

Chief Deputy Eddie Biggs said, "We will have a 'shall arrest' policy situation. We are not going to be writing tickets we are going to put them in jail and if they choose to prey on our citizens we are going to prey on them."

Last year, the task force arrested more than 125 people and recovered $60,000 in stolen property.

Tips for safer shopping:

  • Keep all vehicle doors locked while in or out of your car
  • Avoid driving alone or at night.
  • If you must shop at night, park in a well-lit area and remember where you parked,
  • Do not leave valuables or packages in plain view in your car,
  • Have you keys ready when returning to your car
  • Ask store security for an escort to your vehicle
  • Keep your cash in your front pocket
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
