The southbound lanes of Washington Pike near Knoxville Center Mall is closed Monday afternoon, after an 18-wheeler carrying sodium hydroxide lost part of its load.
According to the Knoxville Fire Department, the spill happened around 10:00 am on Washington Pike near I-640. The chemical is not a threat to the public because of the cool weather conditions.
KFD says the truck did not overturn. The liquid spilled from a valve underneath the trailer.
Hazardous materials crews are on the scene now, and the road is expected to reopen by 1:00 pm.
No one is injured.
