Knoxville man charged with vehicular homicide in east Knoxville crash

A 44-year-old Knoxville man is being charged with vehicular homicide following a fatal accident that killed a 64-year-old passenger Sunday afternoon.

According to a Knoxville Police Department press release, Richard Burks of Saxton Avenue lost control of his vehicle on Brooks Avenue running into a utility pole. The pole snapped in half.  The accident killed Shaheed Abdullah of Selma Avenue.

Police say alcohol and speeding were factors in the accident.

Burks has been charged with vehicular homicide, dui, driving on a revoked license, and driving with no insurance.

One person is dead after a single car crash in East Knoxville Sunday afternoon.

Knoxville Police said a Nissan Sentra was traveling east on Brooks Avenue when its driver lost control of the vehicle. The car ran off the road, struck a utility pole and snapped it in two.

Emergency crews transported the passenger to UT Medical Center where he died shortly after. Police said the driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to UT Medical Center for a mandatory blood test.

Authorities are not releasing any names right now and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
