A Jefferson County deputy is on paid administrative leave after  fatally shooting a man who was charging towards deputies with a weapon in each hand.

According to a press release from Sheriff Bud McCoig, dispatchers received a call Sunday evening around 8:22 pm from a man at Zoomer's convenience store who said he needed to go to a mental hospital.  The man said if he was not at Zoomers, he would be at an address on Lakeshore Drive.

Officers did not find the man at Zoomer's so they went on to the address.  As the two deputies got out of their vehicle, Sheriff McCoig said a 41-year-old man charged towards them with a weapon in each hand.  The deputies ordered the man to drop his weapons, but he kept coming at them, so one of the deputies fired.  The man was struck three times.

The man's name has not been released, but Sheriff McCoig said the deputies were "familiar" with the man.

The officer is on paid administrative leave with pay during the investigation, which is department policy.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and District Attorney General's Office are assisting in the investigation.
