Some Tennessee students will be in the classroom longer next year.
Tennessee, along with four other states, is taking part in a three-year pilot program.
The state will add at least 300 hours of learning time to the calendar in some schools starting next year.
The initiative is an attempt to address falling achievement among U.S. students in elementary school, and make them more competitive globally.
Schools are still deciding how to add the extra time, through longer days or a longer school year.
Tennessee has not said which schools will take part in the pilot program
