A Knoxville man is in the hospital, after being shot while investigators say he was burglarizing a home.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Douglas Adams, 45, heard his dogs barking just before noon on Thursday, so he went out to investigate.  He found Brett Colby Smith, 27, burglarizing the unoccupied home of a family member next door.

Investigators say Smith came at Adams with a sledgehammer and a screw driver, and Adams tried to defend himself by striking Smith with handgun he brought with him.  The gun accidentally went off, and Smith was hit in the head.

Smith ran to his vehicle. Adams says he tried to offer medical attention to Smith, but he took off in his car.  Adams' mother-in-law called 911.

Deputies located Smith a few minutes later on Washington Pike at Babelay Road and taken into custody.   He was transported to UT Medical Center for treatment.  His condition is not known at this time.

Charges are pending against Smith. He has a criminal history in Knox County that includes theft, reckless driving, and burglary. He was most recently released from the Knox County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility on December 2nd on a burglary charge.
