The accident happened in a rural area with no lights or sidewalk. Trooper Jeff Coffey, who investigated the accident, offered these tips to avoid a similar situation:

1. Always walk facing traffic

2. Walk single file

3. Wear bright colored clothing in the daytime and light colored and/or reflective clothing at night to be visible.

4. Keep the volume down on iPods and portable radios to a level where you can still hear nearby warnings and dangers.
