Believe it or not, winter is the perfect time to hit the lake, but not for what you'd expect.
TVA crews are out inspecting rivers and lakes across Tennessee. Wednesday, they were out on Watagua Lake in the Tri-cities. Crews are using the lower water levels this time of year to check buoys.
In the summertime, the buoys will alert boaters and fishermen to underwater rocks and other obstacles.
"Make sure they're where they're supposed to be, if buoys are missing for whatever reason we go back in and try to replace those," said Chuck Bach.
TVA says the effort is all about preventing accidents during boating season.
On Watagua Lake, TVA says levels have dropped to their lowest for the season, which is about 20 feet below the target summer level.
