A Lenoir City family is out of their home after a fire destroyed it Friday morning. Firefighters responded to the home on C Street around 7:20.

Smoke detectors alerted the family to the fire, and they were able to safely escape. Firefighters spent most of the morning and afternoon at the property making sure there weren't any hidden fires.

Fire Chief Richard Martin says the home is mostly beyond repair besides the basement, and while the cause of the fire is still unknown, signs point to it being an electrical fire.

"This is just our second one within the past two months, so we're just now getting into fire season. So Christmastime unfortunately fire season picks up for us in cold weather," he said.

Neighbors tell us the family was renting the home and had just put up their Christmas tree. The Red Cross is helping them.
