Some of the mail going out this week is destined for Americans serving in the military.

The American Red Cross is sorting through several thousand holiday cards for service members. It's part of the charity's national Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.

People across the country started sending the cards to the Red Cross a couple of weeks ago. Some will go to troops overseas, others to veterans and their families in the U.S.

"A lot of the cards, if you read them or look over them say 'Thank you for your service.' They're all positive and they're just thanking the members and their families for their sacrifice. I think that's a great thing," said Jess Hernandez, Red Cross Service to Armed Forces manager.

Once this particular batch of cards gets sorted out, they'll go to military veterans and their families in Knoxville, the tri-cities, and Chattanooga.

This is just one of several programs the local Red Cross does for veterans. If you'd like to learn how to get involved, visit to the Red Cross website.
