The City of Knoxville is moving forward with plans for a new park along the south waterfront.
City Council approved a contract Thursday evening with Cannon and Cannon Incorporated. It's a plan that could run more than $650,000.
They will help complete designs for the Suttree Landing Park, which will be located east of Gay Street along the waterfront. The five-acre park will provide open space and recreational activities for residents and visitors.
Council members also helped pave the way for the Knoxville Zoo to install solar panels on the roofs of its buildings. The zoo would like to complete its first installation by next March.
Knoxville has taken a leading role in efforts to use more solar energy around the nation.
Council normally meets every other Tuesday, but met Thursday because Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year.
