Federal investigators are looking into the possibility that a brazen bank robbery in Newport may be linked to a prior incident in Georgia.

The search continues for two men who walked into the Tennessee State Bank with at least one assault-type rifle a week ago, and demanded money.  The suspects took off without hurting anyone, but they did steal some cash, and hold a police officer at gunpoint.

The pair was last seen in a silver SUV heading toward North Carolina on Interstate 40.

The Atlanta FBI office is investigating a similar robbery at a Suntrust bank in Gainesville,Georgia.  In that case, two men walked into the bank on December 11th and demanded money.  One was armed with an assault rifle.  No one was hurt.

The Knoxville FBI office confirms they are working with the Atlanta office to investigate the robberies, and they routinely share details of bank robberies with other office to check for possible connections.
