A busy intersection in West Knoxville will soon be safer for walking or running.
City crews have started work on a new sidewalk that will run along Gallaher View Road from Bearden High School across Kingston Pike.
The $176,000 project will link several existing sidewalks to the popular Jean Teague, Cavet Station and Ten Mile greenways. City officials say the project was a high priority because of the location and heavy traffic.
"We maintain a database of new sidewalk requests and rank them by priority, and this one came up pretty high, partly because it serves a school and partly because it links up to the greenway system and it's in a place where you really don't want to be walking in the street," said Jim Hagerman, director of engineering for the City of Knoxville.
Officials hope to have the project finished by March 10.
