Best Friends Sanctuary is trying to open an animal shelter in Jamestown.

According to Best Friends Sanctuary President Sharon Cravens, they are overwhelmed with cats and dogs with no place to put them.

There are some foster homes; Carol Stewart has housed as many as 70 animals at a time.

Vice President Phyllis Ferrara receives at least 10 calls a day for animals who need homes.

"I have 13 dogs that people desperately need us to take in and we have no place to put them. None. And this building is going to provide us a place," Ferrara said.

Since June, the group has had a building for the animal shelter; they've invested about $14,000 into the property but still need at least $20,000 more.

"We need funding right now to even keep going because we've just about depleted all our funds going into the building," Cravens said.

It has taken 12 years for the nonprofit organization to get to this point.

"We have no backup. We have very little help," Ferrara explained.

Best Friends Sanctuary believes the shelter could help increase adoption in the county since people could travel to a central location.

Ferrara went on to say, "They don't have a voice. They can't say, I'm hungry, I'm cold. We're their voice."

The group hopes to open the animal shelter within the next year.
