Construction begins this week on a project to build a new Publix and Walmart right beside the University of Tennessee.

The new University Commons project will revamp an abandoned brownfield just off Kingston Pike between Volunteer Boulevard and the Alcoa Highway.

Contractors are already at the site doing some preliminary work before the big construction trailers roll in later this week.

Developers paid $6.5 million dollars for the property.

Right now, Publix and Walmart are the only confirmed businesses at the new shopping center.

Developers say the site will not be a typical "big box store" design, and they're looking for more businesses to move in.

The University Commons is set to open in July of next year.
