Throughout the years, East Tennessee has seen its fair share of frigid temperatures. However, January 21st, 1985 brought a kind of extreme weather our area had never experienced before.
On that frigid Monday morning, the National Weather Service recorded a new record low for our area: -24 degrees. The extreme arctic blast and coinciding weather system kept people inside for days. Interstates were slick with ice, vehicles stalled and water pipes burst all over town.
Nearly 30 years later, -24 degrees still stands at the coldest temperature on record in East Tennessee. The history made that day is one of your "Straight from the Heart Moments."
