Fire officials said ammunition that was being stored in a West Knoxville home exploded after a fire erupted there Sunday morning.
A woman who lives at the home, which is located on Herron Drive off of Northshore Drive, told officials she woke up to the smell of smoke.
She managed to exit the home safely, and a neighbor called 911.
Knoxville Fire Department's Captain D.J. Corcoran said the ammunition explosion startled firefighters, especially with the Webster, New York incident still fresh on the minds of many emergency responders.
Corcoran said firefighters struggled to find a safe entry into the home, due to clutter inside. That delay allowed the fire to extend quickly into the attic area and breached the roof.
No injuries were reported.
