Update 10 pm. The snow has completely stopped and skies are clear, but temperatures are continuing to drop.

Most of the traffic issues around town have been resolved as most people have made their way home.

10News meteorologists warn that roads may be icing over throughout the night, causing for problems with the morning commute.

TDOT says they are working through the night to treat roads.

Update 7 pm.  The snowfall appears to be tapering off in Knox County and most of the area, and is done for the night.  It will be lingering just a little while in the mountains.  The skies are clearing, but the temperatures are dropping into the 20's.  In areas that got snowfall, expect icy roads in the morning.

Update 5:00 pm.  Several inches of snow has already fallen in some parts of East Tennessee, and the snow is still falling.

Update 2:25 pm.  Heavy, wet snow is falling in North Knoxville.

Update 2:05 pm.  Snow is already falling in Bell County, KY and in Scott and Campbell Counties.

The forecast gets a bit tricky during Thursday afternoon.  An area of low pressure will be pushing into the Carolinas.  Abundant moisture and lift is associated with this system, not to mention a great track for winter weather for East Tennessee into North Carolina.

*I think the greatest concern will be in the morning with black ice developing around the area!

REMEMBER:  This is all dependent on IF the cold air catches the moisture source!

Today:  Light to moderate steady rainfall will continue to push from southwest to northeast.  The rain looks to keep up, as rain, through Noon today.  Sleet looks to mix in from Noon until around 2pm.  2pm until 4pm we should begin to see sleet and snow mixing in with some rain.  After 4pm today all rain should transition to all snow.  This event will last until about 7pm for most of us.  It quickly moves East from 7pm until 10 pm.  There is the possibility of seeing quick bursts of snow, which may accumulate creating slushy conditions.  It's going to be very cold today with falling temperatures.  Low to mid 30s by 4pm today with wind chill values in the 20s.

Possible snow amounts:

Dusting-1 inch in southern valley (McMinn, Monroe)
1-3 inches on plateau (Cumberland, Fentress, Scott, Morgan)
1-2inches in central valley (Knox, Loudon, Union, Grainger)
3-6 inches in the foothills (Upper E. TN, Hamblen, Jefferson, Greene, lower elevations of Blount, Cocke, Sevier)
5-10 inches in mountains

Those snow amounts could be locally heavy!  If one of the heavy snow bands settles over an area, snow could fall at 1-2 inches per hour!

Meteorologists Mike Witcher and Todd Howell say the snow amounts could vary widely from southwest to northeast, with the heaviest snowfall likely to the east of Knoxville.

Below freezing temperatures are expected early Friday morning, so icing could be of concern for the morning rush.
All this will occur in a very short time.  By Saturday, sunshine and low 50s for highs are expected!
