A group of Tennessee lawmakers wants to seal off information about the hundreds of thousands of people in the state who have a permit to carry a handgun.
Republican Representative William Laberth of Cottontown has a bill that would close all gun permit records. Only law enforcement could access the information, and that's only if there's an active investigation.
The issue of carry permit records has been a hot-button for years, ever since a Memphis newspaper posted a searchable online database about permit holders. More recently a New York newspaper posted an interactive map showing where gun owners live.
This latest legislation is similar to a 2009 bill that failed in Nashville.
In all, more than 380,000 Tennesseans have handgun carry permits.
