Hundreds of runners participated in the "Race Against Racism" in East Knoxville Saturday.

The race is an annual event, which is part the YWCA's "Diversity Day."

Organizers said more than 500 people participated in the 5-K run and one-mile walk.

YWCA Director of Operations Danielle Benson said the day featured several events designed to get people involved in the community.

"We hold this event every year the weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday to celebrate and get the community together in non-violent ways to open the dialogue and discuss the issues we need to work on here in our community," said Benson.

Money raised from the race will benefit the YWCA's after school program, which helps at risk middle school students. This program provides free tutoring, mentoring, culture and health and fitness for students.
