Some kids spent their Saturday learning important life lessons during the week-long "Martin Luther King Youth Symposium."

Nearly 90 kids participated in the event at Austin East High School, which honors the late Martin Luther King, Jr.

Students gave back to the community with a service project. This year's project will help provide basic school supplies to the needy. Symposium Chair Clarence Vaughn said students also spent time in the classroom learning about important leadership lessons.

"Our theme is education, equals intelligence, plus character. We're focusing on education as a way to harness kids and build them up," said Vaughn. "We're talking to them about finances, talking to them about knowing their rights as far as the 13th and 15th amendments, and what that should mean to them, but also to everyone as far as being an American citizen."

The week-long celebration ends Monday morning with the MLK Memorial Parade, which starts at 10:00 on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue.
