President Obama and John McCain were rivals in the 2008 presidential election and still disagree on policy. But that didn't stop the Arizona Republican from offering an olive branch via Twitter.

"Congratulations to President Obama and his family on this Inauguration Day," McCain tweeted, hours before the the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

When McCain lost the presidency to Obama, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee was gracious in his concession speech as he saluted the nation's first black president.

"His success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance," McCain said then. "But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans, who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president, is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving."
