Antibiotics are losing their healing powers for a growing number of people, according to the Tennessee Department of Health, which is working to educate people about antibiotics resistance.
Resistance happens when antibiotics are misused or over-prescribed.
The American College of Physicians estimates 50 percent of antibiotics prescribed in a year are not necessary because they're given for viral infections. Antibiotics are intended to treat bacterial infections, not viral.
Antibiotic resistance also develops when you don't finish your full dose of medication.
