New fees for backcountry campers in the Smokies will go into effect next month. The changes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will begin on February 14.

The park will charge $4 per person, per night for backcountry camping. In the past, camping was free.

The park says the money will be used for backcountry services, including an online reservation system, more protection from rangers and extended office hours.
