Volkswagen is now powering more than just cars. Wednesday, the German automaker flipped the switch on its new solar park at the Chattanooga plant.
The 33-acre site is the biggest solar installation in the state.
The new park will produce more than 13-gigawawtt hours of electricity per year. That's as much as 1,200 homes in Chattanooga each year.
Volkswagen says the site will provide nearly 13 percent of the plant's electricity needs during full production. During off-peak times, the plant will be entirely solar-powered.
