Six months ago, a Cumberland Avenue fast food staple boarded its windows and shut down for what most of us though was for good. Now, work crews are resurrecting and renovating the Krystal on The Strip, and soon they'll be once again serving up those famous little square burgers.
1718 Cumberland Avenue has sat pretty much untouched for quite some time, until now.
Krystal has contracted with a Chattanooga construction company to renovate the old fast food restaurant building. New floors, walls, and cabinets are being installed to give the business an up-to-date look.
Krystal is excited to reopen the UT location, saying "We couldn't be more pleased to be back in business so close to Rocky Top! We hope our Knoxville Krystal lovers will join us for the grand opening events we'll have in late spring."
Since 1963, Krystal has called the spot on The Strip home. Students, past and present, can't imagine a Krystal-free Cumberland Avenue.
"It's something that all UT students should experience at some point. It's good that it's back," said UT student Adin Thompson.
From gamedays to late nights out with friends, this Krystal is a place students have come to cherish.
"It's a UT staple; it's definitely a place to stop on gameday and stuff like that. There always seems to be a line out the door," said Thompson.
Recently, Cumberland businesses have been coming and going quicker than head coaches. With a business reopening, Thompson hopes this is a sign of a better economy.
"I thought it was going to be another abandoned building on the strip which is never good," he said. "Hopefully it's a sign that the local economy is back and growing a bit."
In the meantime, the construction crew will be working hard, trying to get this Knoxville favorite open once again.
