A state lawmaker who represents the Knoxville area wants to link families' welfare payments with how well their kids do in school.
Republican Senator Stacey Campfield's bill would reduce welfare payments for parents whose children "fail to maintain satisfactory progress in school."
The State Senate website does not clarify at which grade point benefits would be reduced.
Under the bill, families who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families payments would be affected.
Campfield filed the measure Thursday.
