Former state Sen. Roy Herron elected as chairman of the state Democratic Party.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Former state Sen. Roy Herron has been elected as chairman of the state Democratic Party.
The party's executive committee elected Herron on Saturday over Dave Garrison, the party's treasurer, to head the party that has suffered deep losses in recent years.
Herron prevailed despite Garrison's support from the state's two Democratic congressmen and the leaders of the Democratic caucuses in the state House and Senate.
He succeeds Chip Forrester, whose two terms were hampered by a long-running feud with elected Democrats like former Gov. Phil Bredesen.
Herron, a Dresden attorney, retired from the Legislature after a 25-year career in the state House and Senate last year. He made an ill-fated bid for an open congressional seat in 2010, losing to Republican Stephen Fincher by 20 percentage points.
