Some of the most breath-taking views in the world are in the western North Carolina mountains. However, someone vandalized a popular vista where you can see in every direction.
The Appalachian Trail runs right through "The Bald" at Max Patch in Madison County. David Kendall helps maintain the trail and says the gate to "The Bald" was recently destroyed. It was meant to block motorized vehicles, but he says, "People had been driving through the gate here with 4-wheel drive vehicles of some sort and going straight up the trail." Kendall says at the top they carved out a series of "doughnuts".
An information sign at the parking area also has bullet holes in it. Kendall urges anyone with information about who may have done this to contact the Forest Service, which says it's planning on placing boulders to limit vehicle access to the trail.
