KPD identifies body found in South Knoxville

The Knoxville police say a body uncovered near railroad tracks behind Mimosa Avenue Sunday is a 53-year-old Knoxville man who died of a medical condition.

In a press release, a KPD spokesman identified Charles Sherman Richards, of Locus Avenue, as the deceased.

Knoxville Police spokesperson Darrell DeBusk said an autopsy will be conducted Monday on a body found near the railroad tracks in South Knoxville Sunday.  

Officers responded to a report of a possible dead body behind 420 Mimosa Avenue.  Police found the body of a man inside a concrete tunnel over the railroad tracks.  Authorities hope to confirm the identity of the remains through the autopsy.  

DeBusk said there were no obvious signs of foul play during the initial examination of the body.  

KPD will provide additional details once the autopsy has been completed and the next-of-kin has been notified.
