10News has confirmed Knox County Commissioner Dr. Richard Briggs has filed paperwork to challenge Stacey Campfield in the Republican primary in 2014 for the District 7 Senate seat.

Dr. Briggs is a cardiac surgeon who has served on commission five years. He has confirmed his treasurer will be former commissioner Frank Leuthold. Declaring a treasurer allows him to start collecting money.

Campfield, is serving his first term as senator. He has come under fire in recent years for legislation he's filed in the general assembly.

One of his recent proposals calls for reducing welfare for families whose kids get bad grades. Another would require schools to tell parents if their child is involved in homosexual activity.

Dr. Briggs told 10News "We want to take this thing (the district) in a different direction."
