In Kentucky, a House panel passed a bill Thursday banning smoking in public places statewide.
Governor Steve Beshear called for the ban during his annual State of the Commonwealth speech Wednesday.
Beshear says tobacco addiction is hurting productivity in Kentucky, jacking up medical costs, and killing people.
Under the bill, people could still light up, just not in places where others would be exposed to secondhand smoke.
