The Knoxville Police Department and the El Paso Sheriff's Office arrested a man in Knoxville charged in connection with the 1977 slaying of his U.S. Army Officer step-father.
According to both agencies, 54-year-old Roger Evan Garrett was placed under arrest Thursday night. He is being held on a $5 million dollar bond. He and 74-year-old Lizbeth Ann Garrett are charged in the murder of Major Chester Garrett in January of 1977.
Major Chester Garrett was found dead in El Paso County, Texas in 1977. According tp the El Paso Sheriff's Office, the Major was a highly decorated United States Army Officer assigned to Ft. Bliss.
Lizbeth Ann Garrett is also being held on a $5 million dollar bond. El Paso authorities say Lizbeth Ann Garrett was the Major's estranged wife at the time of the murder.
A press release from the El Paso authorities says the case went cold but was reopened in 2006.
A KPD spokesman says officers aided the El Paso Sheriff's Office with the arrest of Roger Garrett.
