NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- An outbreak of tornadoes that struck Middle Tennessee last week was the second-largest such series in the region.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bobby Boyd said Friday that the number of tornadoes documented from the Jan. 30 storms, 22, was eclipsed only by an outbreak on April 3, 1974, in which 24 churned through Middle Tennessee alone. There were 55 tornadoes statewide in that super outbreak, and they killed 46 people across Tennessee.

The storms that spawned the tornadoes last week killed a Nashville man, but the cause of that death was straight-line winds and not a tornado.

Police said 47-year-old Vernon Hartsell died when wind uprooted a large tree and blew it onto a storage shed where he was sleeping in the Bordeaux area, north of downtown around 3:30 a.m.
