A Grainger County couple has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit after their son allegedly suffered repeat physical and emotional abuse from bullies.
The lawsuit seeks $9.8 million from Grainger County, Grainger County Schools, the Rutledge Police Department and others, including the families of two other students.
The plaintiffs claim their son suffered repeated physical and emotional abuse at Joppa Elementary and Rutledge Middle schools from 2009 to 2012. The boy's parents say they informed school officials and law enforcement of the abuse, but they failed to take sufficient action.
In addition to the monetary damages, the plaintiffs also ask for the school to be required to adhere to bullying and harassment guidelines and laws. They also want the school system to designate someone at each school who will serve as a counselor for students who are victims of bullying.
