Dozens of power boat racers will hit the water in Downtown Knoxville late this spring for a championship series competition.
Lightning on the River is set for the first weekend in June. It will bring power boat races to the Tennessee River at Volunteer Landing for some fast-paced fun.
The boats race at speeds of about 115 to 120 miles per hour down a three-quarter mile track. Organizers expect at least 12 boats to race in each class.
"If you like racing, it's exciting. If you like boating, it's exciting. If you just like being outside on a good summer weekend with nothing better to do and you're looking for free entertainment, this is the place to be," said Sherron Winer, co-owner of Circuit Powerboat Super League.
The event last came to Knoxville in 2000. Organizers say they are happy to be back in East Tennessee.
