A 23-year-old Cosby man was killed when the Jeep Cherokee he was riding in drove off the interstate, flipped over several times down one embankment, crossed over another road, and rolled down another embankment.
The driver of the car, 19-year-old Chaz R. Evans, also of Cosby, was injured in the accident.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, the Jeep was originally traveling eastbound on I-40 at mm 437 Tuesday at 5:45 a.m.
The Jeep went off left side of road and struck guardrail. The Jeep then flipped over guardrail onto top sliding down an embankment down to Golf Course Road below. The report then says the Jeep then went airborne and crossed over the road striking the embankment on the other side. The Jeep then came to a stop after rolling down the embankment.
Evans was wearing a seat belt. McCarter was not. According to the investigating trooper, seat belts would not have made a difference.
No citations were issued or charges filed. However, the THP is expecting to release a new report.
