A new Alcoa high school is another step closer to becoming a reality.
The city commission voted Tuesday to buy 53 acres of property of Alcoa's Old West plant site.
Work will begin on the new 180,000 square foot high school building within the next several weeks. The new school will house 1,000 students. The current building is nearly at capacity with 600 students.
The project is expected to cost more than $29 million. Voters approved a sales tax increase last August to help pay for it.
The school is set to open in 2015.
